Approach Founded on the belief that designed landscapes have the potential to deepen our connection with our surroundings, Nordland Studio works to create meaningful and beautiful designs that resonate with the cultural and ecological context of each site. We integrate client needs and desires with artistry and craftsmanship to create designs that are expressive, elegantly detailed, and complimentary to the architectural style of each project. Nordland Studio values a multidisciplinary approach and works closely and collaboratively with clients, architects, engineers, ecologists, artists, craftspeople, contractors, and other professionals. This synergistic relationship cultivates a shared commitment to wholistic and innovative landscape design. Green Design Nordland Studio also values an environmentally sensitive approach to design. This green approach guides our design process as we work to develop solutions that respond to clients needs while also protecting, enhancing and celebrating a site's unique ecology. With this approach we seek to share our sense of stewardship for the land and bring clients closer to the landscapes we help to create. We strive to incorporate a variety of green design strategies and ecologically innovative solutions when appropriate. Solutions such as rain gardens, rain barrels for irrigation, permeable paving, green roofs, and bioswales help to protect natural resources, create wildlife habitat, provide numerous environmental educational opportunities, and minimize site development impact. Additional strategies include the use of native plants and local building materials, and the creation of edible landscapes. Overall, Nordland Studio's green approach to design is guided by the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) LEED rating systems and Vermont's own Vermont Builds Greener rating system. Services Nordland Studio offers landscape design services for residential, institutional, and public projects across all phases of development from conceptual design through construction observation. These projects range in scale from intimate residential garden settings, green roofs, and outdoor classrooms to green housing developments, campus design and public parks.
